After Hurricane Ivan devistated Florida, he wasn't satisfied and cut a path northward, causing more destruction along the way.  In Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio, he depositied  two days worth of hard steady rain upon the already saturated ground in that area.  The result; floods everywhere, and quite a bit of destruction as well.  Enough destruction that Pennsylvania was declared a disaster area.  One of those areas flooded was Good Hope Speedway, the site of the final race on the Pennsylvania Unlimited All-Stars 2004 schedule.  It was reported that the track laid under 2 ft of water, and as a result, the final race was rained out; indeed an understatement.

Jeff Metsger

With the wash-out of the final race, the official results have been tabulated.  There were 3 rain outs.  That's pretty remarkable  due to the amount of rain the area had during the summer of 2004.  Since three of the 15 races were cancelled, the best 8 race-day totals were added up for final points.  It is interesting to note, that although 2004 showed some of the smallest fields in Pennsylvania UAS history, there were 36 different drivers that competed in at least one event.

Here's the final point standings;

1.    Jeff Metsger                #20    406

Bergfelt Racing Enterprises has announced that they will be putting up a bounty worth $50 to the driver who can beat Jeff Metsger in the feature event on September 18 at good Hope Speedway.  The award will be in the form of 5 separate gift certificates from Bergfelt Racing Enterprises.  If no one beats Jeff,  He gets them.

September 4, 2004

The AA Speedway, in Utica, Pennsylvania, was in great shape for the All-Stars on September 4.  To no one's surprize, It was an all Jeff Metsger race.  Once again he captured both heats and the feature.  Don Roy ran very strong, and close to Metsger, all afternoon, but once again hard luck did him in.  He looked as if he could pull off a second place feature finish, but his spark plug unscrewed it self and ended his run.  J.R. Younger, made his UAS debut with his Briggs limited modified.   That combination was very suitable for the AA track configuration and he motored on for a strong second place finish.  Randy Adair, who has been out of comission all season do to injuries to his hands that he suffered due to two separate incidents over the winter, was healed up enough to hang on to a steering wheel.  He wound up third.  Matt Bergfelt gets the sportsman award for the day.  He gave up his ride for the day to allow his older brother Ben, who is serving in the US Army, and was home on leave from overseas for the week, to race.  Ben has not been in a race kart since he was 9!  He controlled the kart well and got quicker and quicker as the day went on.

Points as of September 4;

Jeff Metsger 450, Don Roy 428, Matt Bergfelt 382, Jim Capell 152, Harry McElhaney 115, Jim McMillin 101, Ray Tipton 90, Ned Kelly 90, Paul Adams 85, Mike Clark 78, Todd Blose 76, Andy Buriannek 76, Monette Efaw 74, Joe Mudrick 72, J.R. These are total points and do not factor in the low point daily totals that will be dropped.

Randy Adair and sons
Randy Adair (left) and his sons Brett (middle) and Logan (right) were on hand at AA speedway.  This was Randy's first kart race since he suffered wevere injuries to both of his hands over the winter.  We are glad to have Randy back in action.

August 29, 2004

The skys were very gray on the morning of Sunday August 29, following aFriday and Saturday that will be remembered for heavy down-pours.   Matt Bergfelt and Jeff Natale were optimistic and took a chance that the event would go off.  Their hunch was correct because as the day wore on, blue skys did appear, at least for a while.  Beaverun is a high-tech facility where transponders are used.  It is the only paved track on the UAS circuit, a huge .8 mile tr-oval.  The format there is different that the other tracks on the Pennsylvania circuit.  A qualifying session is run, (for UAS points counted as a heat) then a heat race, then finally a feature.  Matt Bergfelt set the quick time.  He also won the heat.  During the features of the other classes, the skys began to cloud up again and it looked like the remainder of the day might get washed out.  Just prior to the feature, it became obvious that the rains would hold out long enough to run the feature as well.  Consequently, three late entries, one, the twin engine kart of Jim McMillin and two others who had ICA karts.  At the drop of the green, McMillin, starting on the tail, jumped out into the lead at the end of the long Beaverun straight-a-way.   Matt ran strong and could only hold off the more powerful ICA for a little while.   Jeff Natale, a veteran of the stock car ranks, made his UAS debut that day.  It was a tough one for him.  During the feature, he was entering the infamous Beaverun oval turn three and his brake line burst.  He tried his best to avoid hitting another competitor's kart, but his efforts were in vain and he would up on his head and into the tire wall.  Natale suffered a concussion as a result of the incident.  Several days after the event he stated that he will be back but he has to heal up, and get his kart fixed up first.  Look for him at the final race at Good Hope.  Due to the late entries not checking in at the official UAS trailer, we can not report on the names of two of the drivers.  Those names should be on mylaps.com in the near future, but they are not there at the time of this report.

August 14, 2004

The Unlimited All-Stars were on hand for action at Acme Speedway on August 14.  The track was in excellent condition.  The turn-out for this event was disappointing, especially since two competitors who were committed to coming could not make it due to last minute transportation issues.  As usual, it was a Jeff Metsger show as he captured both heats and the feature.  Matt Bergfelt, who has been improving steadily all season, had a good run and wound up second.  Don Roy had a disappointing evening.  He was running very close to Metsger in the feature until a steering system failure cause him to crash into, and through, the front straight fence.  Roy, who is a tough 'ol boy at 64 years old, would up a little sore after the event, but was ready for action the following week.

August 1, 2004

Mike Clark demonstrated why he was the 2003 Pennsylvania Unlimited All-Stars Champion at Kartrack in Albion Pennsylvania.  Kartrack sponsored the event with extra purse money and a trophy.  Clark won both of the heats.  Don Roy almost won the second heat until his ignition coil broke off on the last lap while he was leading.  He also finished the feature second.  Matt Bergfelt ran well, but spun out a couple of times while he became accoustomed to the very slick, paperclip shaped speedway.

Points as of August 1.  (These do not incorporate drop races)

Jeff Metsger 346, Don Roy 340, Matt Bergfelt 288, Jim Capell 152, Harry McElhaney 115, Ray Tipton 90, Ned Kelly 90, Paul Adams 85, Mike Clark 78, Todd Blose 76, Andy Burianek 76, Monette Efaw 74, Joe (Ed) Mudrick 72, Jim McMillin 51, Chad Bogar 48, Rick Berry 48, Brian McHattie 48, Staple Nash 47, Travis Nickles 46, Mark Bergfelt 44, Brad Hopper 42, Mason Boggess 40, Larry Nickles 34, Adam Blankenship 32, Boone Blankenship 28, Jesse Gould 26, David Debolt 26, Scott Owens 26, Eric Foster 26

July 24, 2004

Naugle Speedway's 4th Annual Bull Ring Nationals was also point race #9 on the 2004 schedule.  Jeff Metsger was indeed the man to beat that day.  No one could get around the race track any quicker than he and it looked like he was going to take home all of the marbles, until a caution as the pack headed for the white flag.  After many attempts at a green-white-checker finish, misfortune struck Jeff with a flat tire, that required him to make a pit stop and re-start at the rear.  Jim Capell, who is a regular winner at the speedway ended up with the win.

Round one heats: Capell, Metsger, Harry McElhaney

Round two heats; Capell, Buckey Adams, Metsger
B-main transfers: Boone Blankenship, Mason Boggess, Chad Bogar.
A-Main; Capell #07, Bogar #99, Travis Nickles #11, Metsger #20, Brad Hopper #07, Boggess #8, Michael Clemons #29, Adams #14, Larry Nickles #31, Adam Blankenship #21, McElhaney #12, Blankenship #38.

Eric Foster #20, Scott Owens #24, Mike Clark #710, David Debolt #4, Jesse Gould #2G, Monette Efaw #18, Don Roy #7, Joe/Ed Mudrick #55.

Jeff Metsger's engine and drive train set-up has been the one to beat in Pennsylvania U.A.S action in the 2004 season.

July 3, 2004
Good Hope Speedway, in New Springfield, Ohio (only about 10 miles form the Pennsylvania border) was the site for PA UAS race number 8.  The track was in good shape for the evening's activities.  Good Hope Speedway, under new management for the past two seasons, and equipped with a play ground with slide and swings, has proven to be a great place to take a growing family.  There were little kids everywhere.  Jeff Metsger, once again, proved to be the man to beat.  He continued his streak of winning every qualifying heat that he has been in this season.   He did have a serious challenge during the feature.  The  #49, open Briggs powered kart of Rick Beery gave Jeff a real run for his money for the first 3/4 of the race.  Beery ultimately finished second.  Don Roy motored on to third and Mark Bergfelt, who piloted Matt Bergfelt's crippled kart (Matt injured his elbow in an incident in hot laps) was credited with fourth.
Rick Beery put in an impressive performance in his first UAS race.
Ed Bair shared the track with the Unlimited All-Stars but was scored separately.

Joe-Ed Mudrick has made limited appearances in the UAS this season but is gearing up for the $600 to win UAS race scheduled for Naugle Speedway on July 24.

Current point standings (Please keep in mind that a driver's three lowest daily point totals will be dropped at the end of the season.  Points listed are the gross point totals)

Jeff Metsger 300, Don Roy 266, Matt Bergfelt 252, Jim Capell 100, Ray Tipton 90, Ned Kelly 90, Harry McElhaney 84, Todd Blose 76, Andy Buriannek 76, Jim McMillin 51, Rick Berry 48, Brian McHattie 48, Monette Efaw 48, Paul Adams 48, Staple Nash 47, Joe (Ed) Mudrick 46, Mark Bergfelt 44

(17 drivers total... wouldn't it be nice if we could regularly get everyone to show up at the same place at the same time...one can dream!)
June 27, 2004
Race number 7 one the Pennsylvania Unlimited All-Stars schedule took place on the 3/10 mile asphalt tri-oval at the Beaverun Motorsports Complex in Wampun, Pennsylvania.  What the field lacked in size it made up for in quality.  The most notable entry was the twin engine entry of Jim McMillin.  This machine was just plain fast.   The only thing that kept Jim from making a clean sweep of the day's races was the misfortune of loosing a chain prior to the start of the first heat race.  That paved the way for Staple Nast to put his ICA class kart to the checkers first in the first qualifier.  At the conclusion of the feature the finishing order was; McMillin,  Brian McHattie in an Ital System powered Margay, Staple Nash, and Matt Bergfelt.
Jim McMillin's son, Seth, Jim and Brian McHattie in the winner's circle at Beaverun.

  Staple Nash and his crew.

Jim McMillin flashes a thumbs up at the scales.

Saturday, June 19
Race number 6 on the 2004 Unlimited All-Stars schedule was held at Acme Speedway.  It turned out to be a very cool evening for the latter half of June, but conditions were great for racing.  Once again, it was an all Jeff Metsger evening as he captured both heat races and the feature.  Don Roy had a good run for second.  Ned Kelly, who had lots of horsepower, just didn't have the right tires for the Acme clay, motored on for third.  Ray Tipton was fourth and Matt Bergfelt fifth.

Points after race #6; Metsger 248, Roy 220, Bergfelt 208, Capell 100, Tipton 90, Kelly 90, McElhaney 84, Blose 76, Burianek 76, Efaw 48, Adams 48, Mudrick 46.

Saturday, June 12
Ned Kelly, a landscape contractor from Arizona, was in the Pittsburgh area to do a Job for Chip Ganassi and decided to do a little UAS racing.  He also competes in the Arizona UAS.

Harry McElhaney is a regular competitor at Naugle Speedway.

Race number 5 was held at Naugle Speedway and 10 karts, a real track full on the high-banked bull ring, were on hand.  The field was split into two groups for the qualifying heats.  Todd Blose won both heats of group A and Jeff Metsger won both heats in group B.  These two drivers shared the front row for the start of the feature event.  At the drop of the green, Metsger shot out to the front with Jim Capell right on his bumper.  They battled hard for most of the race.  Near the mid-point Capell, running the high groove, took over the lead but Metsger was never more than a few feet behind him.  Capell lead for several laps until the pair came upon a lapped kart that was running on the high side.  Metsger was now in position to retake the lead.  Rather than checking up and tucking in behind Metsger, Capell tried to squeeze in between the lapped kart and the wall.  As a result the body work and spark plug was torn off of that kart putting it out of the race and the caution came out.  Metsger was out in front at the restart, and Capell was allowed to restart second... and the battle between the pair commenced.  It appeared that Metsger should have been able to hold off Capell until Metsger's chain ripped the teeth off of the axle sprocket ending his run.  Capell then motored on unchallenged to the checkers.  The official finishing order was; Capell, Monette Efaw, Joe-Ed Mudrick, Ned Kelly (originally from Australia and now a resident of Arizona), Mestger, Harry McElhaney, Matt Bergfelt, Don Roy, Andy Burianek, Todd Blose.

Points; Metsger 196, Roy 172, Bergfelt 166, Capell 100, McElhaney 84, Blose 76, Burianek 76, Efaw 48, Adams 48, Mudrick 46, Tipton 46, Kelly 44.

Sunday, May 23 Slippery Rock Raceway has been on the Unlimited All-Stars schedule from the very beginning.  This 1/8 mile bull ring is indeed a drivers track, but is still very fast in spite of how flat and dry it often  is.  In hot laps, it appeared that U.A.S. rookie, Matt Bergfelt was going to be the man to beat.
In the first qualifying heat, Jeff Metsger took advantage of his front row starting spot and shot out for the lead.  Bergfelt, who started on the tail quickly found himself right on the tail of Ray Tipton and pressured him for all but two laps when his ignition TCI unit decided to give up causing him to rapidly fall back to the tail.  Don Roy wound up third and Andy Burianek wound up fifth due to a piston seizure.
Bergfelt started the second heat on the pole, but quickly fell back.  Metsger Motored on, from the tail for the win, Ray Tipton was second followed by Don Roy.
This has been a remarkable season for Jeff Metsger, so far, because he has won every heat race in which he has competed this season in the Unlimited All-Stars.  He started the feature on the pole along side of Tipton.  At the drop of the green, Metsger once again took hold of the lead and never relinquished it.  Don Roy managed to overtake Tipton and held on for a decisive second.  Tipon wound up third and Bergfelt finished fourth.  Andy Burianek was credited with fifth.

Points: Jeff Metsger 152, Don Roy 136, Matt Bergfelt 128, Jim Capell 50, Paul Adams 48, Ray Tipton 46, Harry McElhaney 44, Todd Blose 42, Andy Burianek 42

Saturday, May, 8 Once again, it was supposed to rain all day, but instead it turned out to be absolutely perfect for racing at the Double A Speedway in Utica, Pennsylvania.  Although the number of Unlimited All-Stars drivers that showed up was disappointing, the exhibition, for the crowd that is usually only used to seeing box-stock Briggs racing, was indeed a spectacle.  Jeff Metsger, of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, continued his winning ways, as he, once again, won both of the qualifying heats.  He also powered on to win the feature event.  Don Roy, of Amsterdam, Ohio, captured second spot, the Matthew Bergfelt, of West Mayfield, Pennsylvania, a UAS rookie, wound up in third.

Point Standings as of May 8; Jeff Metsger 100, Don Roy 88,  Matt Bergfelt 84, Jim Capell 50, Paul Adams 48, Harry McElhaney 44, Todd Blose 42

Saturday, May,  1   It was supposed to be a rainy day but it turned out to be absolutely gorgeous for racing at Naugle Speedway.  Jeff Metsger looked to be the man to beat as he dominated both qualifying heats.  Jim Capell, who lately has been the quickest to get around the South Western Pennsylvania bullring got the jump at the drop of the green, but Metsger was well with-in striking distance for the first 1/3 of the 20 lap feature.  After that point, Metsger slowed and Paul Adams, of Hudson, Ohio, took over second spot. When Metsger was asked, what happened?, his reply was, "It wasn't the kart, I just got too  tired".  At the checkers it was Capell Mongoose/Sudam, followed by Adams Naugle/Sudam, MetsgerMongoose/BRE Sudam, Harry McElhaney White/Yamaha, Todd Blose Mongoose/BRE Yamadam, Don Roy Mongoose/BRE Sudam, and Matt Bergfelt CRG/BRE Yamadam in his UAS debut.

Current Points Standings
Jim Capell 50, Paul Adams 48, Jeff Metsger 48, Harry McElhaney 44, Todd Blose 42, Don Roy 40, Matt Bergfelt 38.

Sunday, April 25   The season opener at the .3 mile paved tri-oval was rained out. Jim McMillin had a really cool direct drive Comer powered twin engine kart on hand but everyone was disappointed that he never had a chance to put it out on the track.  Ray Tipton made the drive from Virginia for the event and Matthew Bergfelt was going to make his UAS debut, but the only winner was the rain.  American Power Sports was the sponsor of the event.  Their sponsorship will be transferred to the next Beaverun event scheduled for June 27.

Don Roy put on a great show and had a lot of fun at Kartrack, in Albion, Pennsylvania last summer.  Mike Clark wound up capturing the 2003 Pennsylvania Unlimited All-Stars title.
